Rose hips

Rose hips

During the medieval period the rose was grown mainly for its medicinal properties, but later in the 19th-Century when the essential oil of roses was re-discovered the fragrant rose became best known for its use in perfumery. Although the Apothecary’s rose is still used for potpourris, teas, lotions and cosmetics, it is the fruit of the rose, ‘rose hips’, that has proved to be a highly curative remedy in modern times. In the 20th- Century both the wild Dog Rose (Rosa canina) and ‘Rosa Mustique’ (R. rubiginosa) rosehip seed oils have been used for both remedial and cosmetic skin products.

Bringing Up Baby - The Continuum Concept!

Bringing Up Baby - The Continuum Concept!

This is one of the newly arrived Black-capped Capuchin Monkey species at Royal Melbourne Zoo. (RMZ)
There is at least one new baby, possibly two – and the monkey clan are certainly fascinated by the new members – some of the aunts and uncles seem to be fighting each other to get to hold the baby – and Mum is very aggressive in defending her own.
A recent BBC TV series screened on Australian TV about bringing up human baby has had much attention and controversy due to exploring 3 different parenting philosophies, including one called the Continuum Concept, where the baby is always held or in physical contact with its parents or extended family for at least 6 months – it sure looks like these monkeys have modelled this method long before the South American indigenous tribes, after whom the method has been based.
It’s amazing how the baby monkeys can hang-on to mother, even as mother is jumping or climbing the highest branches!
These monkeys are often used in TV and movies, such as “Pirates Of the Caribbean “ films as they look like the generic "monkey" that most people think of.
These monkeys have been quite active during my visits in the past few weeks, and it’s been a real highlight for me, and plenty of other visitors -
I have had a long wait to get some decent photos of the new residents - firstly the have been very popular, and attracting lots of human interest, making it hard to get a clear shot, and secondly, these guys are often in constant motion, playing with each other, climbing and jumping, and thoroughly exploring their new space.
Thirdly, the viewing glass has been badly smeared with lots of human handprints - ruining a number of otherwise perfectly focused and sharp photos!
Black-Capped Capuchins have a large tuft of black fur crowning their heads, which explains their name!

Black-Capped Capuchins have very long arms and legs as compared to their body, which measures about 18 inches. The prehensile tail is also about 18 inches long. The Black-Capped Capuchin has human-like hands with an opposable thumb. The molar teeth are thickly coated in enamel to help the Capuchin crack nuts without cracking its teeth!
Native to the rainforest, the Black-Capped Capuchin has the largest range of all New World Monkeys. The below information is from RMZ’s own web site:
In the wild, this species also lives in groups with similar numbers of males and females, rather than forming a pair like the White-cheeked Gibbons or a polygamous grouping like the Lion-tailed Macaques.

In their native South America, Black-capped Capuchins are found in primary and secondary rainforest through to semi-deciduous lowland areas.
They have a varied diet, including many kinds of fruit, nuts, seeds, pith, and nectar, plus animal prey including insects, chicks, frogs, reptiles, bats, and even small mammals weighing up to 900g.
Black-capped Capuchins are acknowledged as being one of the primate species that uses tools. For example, they use rocks to help them crack open the nuts that feature in their diets.

[70/365] SXSW Pillow Fight

[70/365] SXSW Pillow Fight

Walking along 6th Street in Austin, TX provides something different every night. Most of the time it was just a lot of people (well, hipsters and hippies) but on the night of the 11th March something special was going on. Admittedly just 2 blocks down the road, the iPad 2 was still selling well after being on sale for only 4 hours, but on the corner of 6th and San Jacinto there was a pillow fight. To this day, I still don't know who instigated it (the original fighters didn't have branded t-shirts, just underwear) but there were a lock of duck feathers and not a lot of clothes. There was also a large male audience documenting proceedings on their camera phones.

Essentially, there were girls having a pillow fight. All fairly harmless until you realised how much mess had been created in the street. A wandering policeman then appeared and asked them to clean it up. Whilst radioing whoever it is they radio to detail it, they legged it. Now faced with a problem, the policeman turned on the one remaining girl (who couldn't quite believe her friends had run off) and told her to clean it up. After a bit of an argument, two random people ran in, picked up the pillows and continued fighting whilst everyone watched on. Original lady then tried to make good with her legs like her friends and ran off but the policeman chased her and bought her back. Now there were 3 people, they were forced to pick the feathers up off the street (not one you'd like to touch) whilst he watched.

I've seen some strange things in my time, but this has to be one of the better ones...

Today was a fantastic day - it was my first full day in Austin, first time at SXSW, and I was meeting up with some friends I'd only spoken to online up until this point. To top it off, there was a girl pillow fight, I bought an iPad 2 (on the day of release), and I got a pedicab ride to a private Gowalla party which I crashed with 2 friends. Despite all of that, this is my favourite photo of the day - whilst it would usually be the iPad 2, Apple lauches happen fairly regularly. I don't think I'll ever see a girl laughing at a stern-looking policeman whilst picking up feathers from his feet ever again in my lifetime.

'INDIA AND WEST ASIA' MEA Distinguished Lecture Series on India's Foreign Policy by Ambassador Rajendra Abhyankar

'INDIA AND WEST ASIA' MEA Distinguished Lecture Series on India's Foreign Policy by Ambassador Rajendra Abhyankar

Director, IIT,

And Friends

I thank the Ministry of External Affairs and the IIT for giving me the opportunity
to talk of Indian and West Asia – a region in which I spent over a decade of my
career dealing with its complexities and challenges. It is interesting that I speak to
you on West Asia here in Mumbai- I don’t know how many of you are aware that Iraq was administered from the Bombay Presidency during the early part of the British period. You have only to go to the Prince of Wales Museum - Chhatrapati Vastu Sangrahalaya - to see archaeological artefacts from ancient Iraqi sites which were brought to Mumbai then. But even more, Bombay has been, and remains, the first point of contact between the peoples of the Arab world- particularly the Gulf and Iran- and India. For decades we have seen Arabs in their traditional garb walking
and lounging on Marine Drive taking the air in the monsoon season- something
which is a rarity in their land.People who hail from Pune or Bangalore are equally
familiar with Iranians who have settled generations ago. In fact when I was doing my
PhD at Mumbai University Geroge’s Restaurant was a favourite for the Biryanis and
Pullav’s it served!
I do not need to mention to this gathering that contact between the Indian
people with those of West Asia goes back to centuries - even before Islam came to
that region; neither do I need to mention that this intercourse was two-way and
primarily benign. If we gave them the zero and the numeric system, we received
knowledge of navigation and sea-faring; if the tales of the panchatantra reached
them, in the Persian translation, as the stories of kalila wa dimna , then we received
the metre and the rhyme of sufi poetry not to mention its theology. There were
similar exchanges in the field of mathematics, astrology and astronomy, and
medicine as also in craft- skills like carpet-making and brocade weaving ( zardodzi
and kinkhab). The list is long but covers religion, culture, fine arts, sciences, music
and musical instruments, dance, language and literature, and cuisine. But above all
were the travel writings of Arab way-farers like al-Beruni and others who have left us
a wealth of record on India of that time. The essential driver was trade and
commercial exchanges. But for the water that separates us we are neighbours; the
relationship has been both enriching and enduring.
When one looks at the Asian land-mass to our West we see four separate
civilisations facing us- the Persian, the Arab, the Hebrew and the Turkish- all of them
were brought together under the Ottoman Empire which lasted 500 years and had
the widest spread of the then known world. It is interesting that while these four
cultures confronted one another, it was to India that they all aspired- through trade or
conquest or to escape from persecution in their native lands. It is even more
interesting that they do not seamlessly merge into one another at their peripherywhich
may possibly have something to do with the ethnicities and languages that go
with each culture: the Persians (or Iranians) are from Indo –Aryan stock, the Arabs
and Jews are both Semitic peoples and the Turks are themselves with a mixture of
the Mongol. Each of these cultures has had a unique historical relationship with
West Asia not Middle East
It would not be out of place here to digress briefly to the controversy that runs
like a common thread on discussions on the region in India: its nomenclature. Middle
East is what it is commonly called, even though West Asia is its correct geographic
location. It is so pervasive that even the computer dictionary gives you a prompt to
capitalise M and E if you have not done it). We invariably call it West Asia. From
where we are middle east will be Bangkok! So why WEST ASIA?
The term Middle East was first used by US Admiral Mahan in 1902 to
designate his strategic concept for the land bridge connecting Africa, Asia and
Europe. As our Vice President, Hamid Ansari,, another former diplomat, has written,
the term is a misnomer and legacy of an era when points on the globe were
indentified with reference to the location of the seats of power of the European
Empire. Nehru firmly distanced himself from calling it the ‘Middle East’ as Quite apart
from its geographical position, it tended to continue a Euro-centric view of the region
along with the attitudinal baggage that it implied.
Since Independence a lot has changed in the region- especially at the political
and geo-strategic level. The oil crisis of 1974 focused the international community’s
attention on the region as never before. When one super-imposes the monumental
political developments, the world sees the ‘Middle East’ as the fulcrum of future
political and economic stability in the world. The region’s nomenclature as ‘Middle
East’ has gained widespread acceptance and even people of the region see
themselves as from the Middle East first, and then as nationals from the country they
belong. The word Middle

Prevention Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook: A Four-Week Plan to Cut Cravings and Lose Weight

While common dieting wisdom suggests that those who need to lose weight must be eating too much, the newest discoveries in weight loss science now reveal that what’s not being eaten can hinder weight reduction. Fiber is turning out to be the silver bullet of dieting—because it can fill you up on fewer calories, dampen cravings for fattening foods, and dramatically improve your overall health.
Consuming the right amount of dietary fiber can have profound health benefits. It can cut the risk of heart disease by 30 percent; lower cholesterol by as much as 13 points; decrease inflammation; drop blood pressure; balance blood sugar; improve memory; reduce the risk for breast, colon, and endometrial cancer; and boost the immune system. Unfortunately, ramping up fiber levels too quickly can also cause digestive distress. With an easy-to follow, 4 week plan, Prevention’s Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook shows how to switch over to high-fiber living without experiencing excessive gas or uncomfortable bloating.
Of course, for any weight-loss plan to work, the food must be fabulous. Prevention’s Fiber Up Slim Down Cookbook is packed with more than 200 delicious, fiber-rich recipes that work with any fiber-rich diet plan including home-style dishes like Roasted Sweet and Russet Potato Salad and Mom’s Turkey Meatloaf, tasty new favorites like Curried Beef with Pineapple and Coconut, and sweet treats like Ginger–Sweet Potato Cheesecake and Pumpkin Fruitcake.

Up for Renewal: What Magazines Taught Me About Love, Sex, and Starting Over

Now in paperback, the memoir of a woman who tackles the mess she’s made of her life by turning it over to a stack of women’s glossies.
Cathy Alter’s Up for Renewal has captured the public’s imagination, from Cathy’s appearances on the Today show and her numerous write-ups in publications such as The New York Observer, The Atlantic, and Allure. Now in paperback, Up for Renewal is just right for beach-readers eager to hear the laugh-out-loud story of how one woman turned her life around by following the simple wisdom found in women’s magazines. By age thirty-seven, with a failed marriage under her belt, Alter was continuing down the path of poor decisions, one paved with a steady stream of junk food, unpaid bills, questionable friends, and highly inappropriate men. So she dedicated her life to the women’s magazines for the next year, resolving to follow their advice without question. By the end of her subscriptions, she would get rid of upper-arm jiggle, crawl out of debt, host the perfect dinner party, run a mile without puking, engage in better bathtub booty, ask for a raise, and overhaul her apartment. At least that was the premise of her social experiment. What actually happened was much less about cosmetic change and much more about internal transformation. Singular in its voice and yet completely universal, Up for Renewal appeals to all who have ever wondered if they could actually make their life over.

Yvonne Monlaur (1939) starred in several European film productions of the late 1950’s and 1960’s. The glamorous French starlet is best known for her roles in a few Hammer horror films.

Yvonne Monlaur was born Yvonne Bedat de Monlaur in Pau, France in 1939. Her father was a White Russian count and her mother was a ballet dancer, who had great plans with her daughter. She followed her mother's footsteps and took ballerina lessons. She eventually worked as a teenage model for magazines like Elle, when director Andre Hunebelle discovered her. He gave her small parts in his films Treize a table/Thirteen at the Table (1955, Andre Hunebelle) with Micheline Presle, and Mannequins de Paris/Mannequins of Paris (1956, Andre Hunebelle) starring Madeleine Robinson. She then had a supporting part in the Fernandel comedy Honore de Marseille/Honore from Marseille (1956, Maurice Regamey). Then Italian director Franco Rossi called her to Rome for the Italian-Spanish co-production Amore a prima vista/Love at First Sight (1958, Franco Rossi) starring Walter Chiari. She starred in more Italian films such as Non sono piu Guaglione/I am not Guaglione anymore (1958, Domenico Paolella) with Sylva Koscina, and Tre straniere a Roma/Three Strangers in Rome (1958, Claudio Gora) with Claudia Cardinale’s in one of her first leading roles. That year Monlaur was also spotted by the British producer Anthony Hinds. He asked to come to England to play in the an episode of the TV series Women in Love (1958) with George Sanders as host. In 1959 she suddenly seemed to be ‘hot’ all over Europe. In France a Paris magazine voted her the year's sexiest screen newcomer, in Great Britain she was featured with a four-page pictorial in the September issue of Male magazine and in Italy she is on the cover of a June issue of Tempo magazine and an Italian newspaper calls her the year's most promising actress. But during the shooting of the comedy Avventura a Capri (1959, Giuseppe Lipartiti) she had a serious accident. She suffered bad facial burns in a speedboat, resulting in months of recovery at a hospital.

In 1960 Yvonne Monlaur traveled accompanied by her ambitious mother to England for a series of films. First she co-starred in the comedy Inn for Trouble (1960, C.M. Pennington-Richards). Then followed the Hammer horror film The Brides of Dracula (1960, Terence Fisher). Hal Erickson writes at Rovi: “One of the best of the Hammer horrors, Brides of Dracula stars Peter Cushing as tireless vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing. Though Drac himself doesn't make an appearance, his influence is felt thanks to teenaged bloodsucker Baron Meinster (David Peel). The baron's loving mother (Martita Hunt) shelters her son from harm, all the while scouring the countryside for potential female victims. When misguided schoolteacher Marianne (Yvonne Monlaur) falls in love with young Meinster, Van Helsing is forced to take drastic measures to show her the error of her ways. Excellent (and very bloody) special effects highlight this sumptuous production.” In Circus of Horrors (1960, Sidney Hayers), this time for the Amalgamated studio, she appeared alongside Donald Pleasance and Anton Diffring as a deranged German plastic surgeon. She played a Chinese lady in the Hammer production The Terror of the Tongs (1961, Anthony Bushell) with Christopher Lee as the vicious leader of a Chinese Tong gang operating in 1910 Hong Kong. Hal Erickson describes it as “a gory, garishly colored melodrama written by Jimmy Sangster in the tradition of the Fu Manchu films.” Back in Italy she had a small part in the romantic comedy It Started in Naples (1960, Melville Shavelson) starring Clark Gable and Sophia Loren. She continued to work in England too and appeared in Time to Remember (1962, Charles Jarrett), one of a series of second feature films based on Edgar Wallace novels released in the UK between 1960 and 1965.

In France Yvonne Monlaur played a supporting part in Lemmy pour les dames/Ladies’man (1962, Bernard Borderie), one of the cult action films starring Eddie Constantine which were based on the crime novels by Peter Cheney. She stayed in France for the crime comedy A cause, a cause d'une femme/Because of a Woman (1963, Michel Deville) with Jacques Charrier and Mylene Demongeot, and the crime potboiler Le concerto de la peur/Night of Lust (1963, Jose Benazeraf) with a fabulous free-jazz score by Chet Baker. The latter was a thriller about two rival mobsters who fight for control of the local drug traffic. The film also included a lesbian nightclub act, which was featured on the English poster. Monlaur then screentested for the role of Domino Derval in the James Bond film Thunderball (1965, Terence Young). In his book The James Bond Films (1981) Steven Jay Rubin features a picture of Monlaur posing in a 'Domino' bathing suit. The role eventually went to another French actress, Claudine Auger. On the eighth day of Christmas
My fan girl gave to me
Eight blades a-filking
Seven zombies zooming
Six beasts a-baying
Five golden rings
Four falling birds
Three henchmen
Two turtle bros'
And a part bridge of Khazad-dum

"The Singing Sword" is a fine old fantasy cliche, perhaps most famously wielded by Hal Foster's "Prince Valiant". The idea that an enchanted blade might enjoy a bit of a sing-a-long is ripe for parody, and singing swords have featured in cartoons like "Dave The Barbarian", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and Bugs Bunny's "Knighty Knight Bugs", where the crooning blade warbled "Cuddle up a Little Closer, Lovey Mine."

Now, it strikes me (not the sword!) that the song that the Bugs Bunny's blade hums at the end of the Warner Bros cartoon, "Farewell to thee", is probably more likely to be the kind of grim little ditty that a red-blooded sword would prefer, given their gory diet, if you take my point. (Not the sword's!)

So, to the fine art of filking, that is, the Science Fiction and Fantasy fan pastime of writing new lyrics for established songs. Nothing makes Geekness so merry as a little impromptu caroling with the cutlery...

Here are eight jolly Filksongs for eight cheery swords.

From left to right, the swordsmen and their sword-songs:

-Zorro, not Don Diego de la Vega, but his replacement in "The Mask Of Zorro" film, starring Antonio Banderas.

I know there's a sword for zis
I know there's a sword for a leetle killing
I know there's a sword for zis
I know it, and it's the tip of my blade
And I dedicate it to my father

I know there's a sword for zis
I know, 'cause it's in my armoury
And when i find where 'tis
I'll smite ze clowns, and ze Dons again
Will be certain to avoid it.

-Aragorn the Second, King Elessar, twenty-sixth King of Arnor, thirty-fifth King of Gondor and the first High King of the Reunited Kingdom, also known as Strider, sixteenth Chieftain of the Dunedain, the Rangers of the North. His sword is Anduril, "Flame Of The West" (formerly Narsil before it was reforged)

i wanted to whack for you - slice to the bone
i don't want to be alone
said i need someone to hold on tight
get ready for this magical fight

happily i'm cleaving so deep
which i am supposed to do
love a big old sword, inside Orc insides
I sliced and sliced, and I just can't hide the love

love me 'cos i'm a big arse two-hander sword
can't fight the killing, 'cos battles what I do
love me 'cos i'm a big arse two-hander sword
if you're not careful, i'm gonna get you too

-Kor, Dahar Master of the Klingon Empire, from the Star Trek universe (played by John Colicos) with a traditional bat'leth weapon. Kor was unusual in that he preferred a stock (though well made) blade from the armoury of whatever starship he happened to be serving aboard, to a custom made or 'named' sword from his family arsenal. It became a famous point of Kor's honour: "Good enough for the crew, good enough for me!"

Edge of blade's strong, ready for the fight
Edge of blade's strong, ready for the fight
Just know that I'm not going to bind.
Just know that I'm not going to bind.
So just say the word and I'll slice for you tonight
So just say the word and I'll slice for you tonight
And I'll be right there by your side...battlin' on.
And I'll be right there by your side...battlin' on.

-Puss In Boots (in the pawground), from "Shrek II", voiced, by no particular coincidence, by Antonio Banderas.

Getting ready to slay, and I'll share it with you
And I'm swinging 'round to bleed you.

With the sun in his eyes, starin' the thousand yard stare.
Yeah I'm swinging 'round, in your blind spot-there!

Now there's blood enough and time to swing again
As if there weren't enough and-

One supple sword, one supple sword
One supple sword, one supple sword

-Beatrix Kiddo (The Bride), formerly of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, played by Umma Thurman in the "Kill Bill" movies with her exceptionally lethal Hattori Hanzo steel katana.

I'm so paranoid - point/slay
No I'm not afraid - chop/point
As I slice asunder - fight/win
Scabbard will not bind - hack!

A gun in the hand isn't fun as a blade
A gun in the hand isn't fun as a blade
A gun in the hand isn't fun as a blade
A gun in the hand replaces me instead!
I'll attack, we'll attack
I'll attack, we'll attack
I'll attack, we'll attack
I'll attack, we'll attack

-Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) from "Heroes", with the Takezo Kensei katana that helps him focus his time-bending powers.

That's my point a-making all this noise
Just culling out the common herd
I'm sli
